Make this with a friendly smiling face and it's the perfect little spider to send up the water spout when you're singing The Itsy Bitsy Spider with a group of preschoolers. :-)

Make this with black or very dark gray felt and it's the perfect spider to scatter on a table or clip in your hair for Halloween.

This is exclusively available as a PDF pattern, delivered instantly and ready to print onto letter-size paper. No shipping costs and no waiting!

With detailed instructions, step by step photos, and video tutorials, this versatile pattern is easy enough for beginners. Have fun with it!

Pattern Details

You Get. . .

  • A digital pattern delivered by email. (If you're not sure what a PDF pattern is, you'll find more info here.)
  • A full-sized pattern – no enlarging needed.
  • Detailed instructions with lots and lots of step-by-step photos. You’ll never feel lost or wonder if you’re doing things right.
  • Links to videos teaching you every skill you’ll need to make your own spider – from embroidering the face to whipstitching the pieces together. You can totally do this! It’s a workshop in a pattern!

Size

So how big is the Not-So-Itsy-Bitsy spider? Not HUGE. With the legs all bent up as shown it's about 3 1/3 inches across. That will pretty much fill up the palm of an adult's hand.

Difficulty

Super easy! This spider uses just two super simple stitches to make – whipstitch and backstitch. And if you skip the face it's only whipstitch! Those stitches are so easy I teach them to kids as young as six.

Seriously – cutting the pieces out is harder than sewing this guy up. You can do it!

    Materials Needed

You can find links to sources for many of my favorite tools and supplies here.

    You’ll need. . .

    • 1/4 sheet wool felt for the body (I used Smoky Marble for the friendly spider and Licorice for the spooky one)
    • a pipecleaner
    • black embroidery thread for the face (optional)
    • matching embroidery thread for the felt (I used DMC #535 to match the Smoky Marble and DMC #3799 to match the Licorice)
    • a tiny pinch of polyester fiberfill (you can use a cotton ball instead)

You might also want some freezer paper (optional, but recommended)

    Permissions

This pattern is not available for commercial resale. That means you may not copy and sell or digitally distribute the pattern or any variation of the pattern

For example, you may not print the pattern and sell those copies.

You may not use the designs in the pattern to create and sell an embroidery pattern, or acrylic templates of all the pieces in the pattern.

    Yes!

You may, however, sell anything you make with Shiny Happy World patterns as long as you are the one making it.

For example, if you're using this pattern to make spiders which you sell at a craft fair or in an online shop, that's great!

    Maybe

If you're hiring out any part of the process, please get in touch and we'll work out a fair licensing agreement.

For example, if you want to hire someone to sew the spiders, or die cut the pieces, those two scenarios would require a licensing agreement. Get in touch! I'm easy to talk to. :-) smile@shinyhappyworld.com

    Itsy spider body

I found the body too small for fitting in all of the legs, so I cut out a bigger body and the legs were easier to assemble. My granddaughter was so enthralled, that we made 12 kits / ready to make patterns for her friends. We made our own yarn spider web and played with the spiders today.
